How to Grow Rice from Store-Bought Brown Rice

Growing rice from store-bought brown rice (unprocessed, whole-grain rice) is possible, but it doesn’t always work. Most packaged rice is either heat-treated or irradiated, which destroys its ability to germinate. However, if the rice is truly raw, organic, and unprocessed, it may sprout.

1. Choosing the Right Rice

  • Most supermarket “brown rice” is processed and won’t sprout.

  • Look for organic products labeled as “raw.”

  • The most reliable way is to buy actual rice seeds (paddy rice) from seed suppliers.

2. Sprouting the Rice

  1. Rinse the rice well with clean water.

  2. Soak it in warm water for 24–36 hours, changing the water every 12 hours.

  3. Wrap the swollen grains in moist cotton or paper towels and place them in a container.

  4. Within 2–5 days, small roots should appear if the rice is viable.

3. Planting in Pots or Garden

  • Rice loves water and is usually grown in paddies, but at home you can try:

    • A wide, deep pot.

Fertile garden soil mixed with compost or peat.

    • Plant sprouted grains 2–3 cm deep.

    • Keep the soil constantly moist or slightly flooded.

4. Care

  • Rice grows best at 20–35 °C (68–95 °F).

  • Place in a sunny spot.

  • Maintain 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) of standing water above the soil.

  • Reduce water as harvest time approaches.

5. Harvest

  • Rice is ready when stalks turn golden yellow.

  • Cut and dry the stalks in a shaded place.

  • Thresh the grains from the heads once dry.
